Chris Barker, a 64-year-old from Barton upon Humber, is urging others with mental health challenges to seek help, after support from North Lincolnshire’s mental health service assisted in his recovery and return to work
Chris battled depression for nearly 25 years, reaching a low point due to job-related stress
He ultimately sought help through the North Lincolnshire Talking Therapies service, facilitated by the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH)
Chris shared his journey, noting the impact of the therapy he received
“The last two or three years, it came on a lot more because of a previous job I was in,” Chris said
“Since I’ve been to the Talking Therapies service, I’ve felt absolutely brilliant.”
Chris engaged with cognitive behavioural therapy and accessed employment support through the service, which aided his job search and career rebuilding
“Work and wellbeing go hand in hand, so it’s important to get help for both,” Chris explained
Chris advocates for addressing mental health stigma and encourages individuals to prioritise their mental wellness
“I know depression is still stigmatised, but don’t feel ashamed,” he said
“When you notice the first signs that you’re feeling down or suffering with depression, speak to somebody. My experience with Talking Therapies has been fantastic.”
Lydia, his therapist, praised Chris’s efforts and highlighted the service’s support capabilities
“We can help if you’re struggling with symptoms of low mood, feeling tearful or sad,” Lydia said
“You don’t need to have the right words to explain how you’re feeling. We’ll guide and support you every step of the way.”
Lesley, Chris’s employment advisor, reflected on Chris’s positive progress
“It was a pleasure to help him find his new job as a compound driver in Killingholme, it’s something that really fits his skills,” Lesley said
The initiative underlines the importance of mental health and employment services working together, enriching lives and fostering recovery
