Sugar-sweetened drinks are widely consumed. They are relatively cheap, easy to drink and highly addictive, leading people to overconsume them, which can ultimately cause a host of problems affecting our our health
Jaume Fontanals, a gut microbiome expert who shares health advice on social media, posted a video on TikTok in which he argues that orange juice is not as healthy an option as many people believe. “If you think orange juice is always a healthy choice, let me explain why that’s not necessarily the case,” he begins. He then points out that just 250 milliliters of orange juice contains “between 20 and 25 grams of sugar.”
“Makes no sense”
“To put that into perspective, that’s six teaspoons of sugar you’re consuming,” he says. He then refers to World Health Organization recommendations: “It suggests you should consume 25 grams of sugar a day, and with just one small glass you’re already pushing that limit. You have to understand that this is because it takes at least three or four oranges to make that little glass of juice.”
Fontanals therefore stresses that it “makes no sense” to drink a glass of orange juice that requires three or four pieces of fruit to make. “On the other hand, you need to understand that simply eating the fruit will give you the fiber you need, keep you feeling full and help control the blood sugar spikes you can experience,” he adds

Finally, the gut microbiome expert has one last message for his followers, advocating moderation and self-control without suggesting people need to give up indulgences altogether, provided they are an occasional treat. “That doesn’t mean you can’t have a little glass of juice once a month, but be mindful of what you do, because we are what we eat,” he concludes
