Between brain fog, low energy, and unexplained weight gain, aging can feel like an uphill battle. The good news is, you no longer have to just power through it. When integrated into a personalized health plan, hormone and peptide therapy can help you hit the reset button on your body, bringing back a more vibrant, energized version of your best self. We turned to the experts at A Beautiful You Medical Spa in Memphis to explain these in-demand treatments and how they can help you optimize your health.
There’s a lot of noise in the wellness world lately, and all the information can be confusing. Between self-proclaimed “experts” and fitness influencers pushing the latest products to “optimize your health,” it’s hard to know which methods are worth the hype. So, what does health optimization really mean?
For nurse practitioner Megan Stewart at A Beautiful You Medical Spa, health optimization lives at the intersection of health care and aesthetics. Think med spas over day spas, and an intentional pivot among medical professionals to true, preventive care
Celebrating two decades of serving Memphis, A Beautiful You has evolved from the early days of facials, lasers, and injectables to include comprehensive, wellness-driven options that address how a woman feels just as much as how she looks. Megan and the team at A Beautiful You are passionate about this whole-patient approach that optimizes the body’s function from the inside out
“What we didn’t know 20 years ago, we know now,” Megan explains, pointing out a recent shift toward closing what she calls “a big gap” in women’s overall health. “People can age gracefully and with much better health options than they could many years ago. You don’t have to be miserable. We’re trying to make people feel better.”
As a nurse practitioner, Megan was used to seeing patients seeking the quick refresh that Botox and lasers could provide. But she soon discovered that, while these patients looked more lively on the outside, many were struggling on the inside
“I had these patients coming in all day, every day, for Botox and telling me things like, ‘I’m so tired,’ or, ‘I’m going through menopause,’ or, ‘I don’t want my husband to even look at me,’” she recalls
Enter bio-identical hormone replacement. “Unlike older, synthetic hormones manufactured in a lab, bio-identicals perfectly match the hormones your body makes naturally,” explains Megan. “Your body can’t tell the difference.”
While hormone therapies are available as pills and compounded creams, the team at A Beautiful You specializes in bio-identical pellets. The simple, relatively painless in-office procedure involves implanting a tiny pellet beneath the skin. It allows for a slow, steady delivery of hormones, rather than constant fluctuation
Megan says the majority of patients on pellets report a serious boost in energy and sex drive, along with an overall feeling of wellness that many thought was gone for good. Plus, patients love the convenience — no messy creams, no daily pills to remember, and no frequent injections
The key to the success of pellet therapy is finding the right provider
“It takes a provider who has the ability to spend that time with the patient to be able to provide good pellet care,” Megan says, adding that in today’s fast-paced medical world, doctors are often rushing from one patient to the next
“They don’t have time to sit there and talk about the patient’s goals, their sex life, and what they want to do about their 10-pound weight gain,” she says. “They’re worried about the big picture, and need to move on.”
That’s where an expert-led med spa like A Beautiful You comes in. Pellets must be carefully monitored through blood tests to ensure your hormone levels remain within a healthy range for your specific needs. They are not one-size-fits-all. Someone with a highly active lifestyle, for example, might need higher levels of testosterone than someone who leads a sedentary life. That’s why it’s important to work with a dedicated nurse practitioner who can not only run your labs but also read and expertly interpret them to adjust your dosage to the optimal level.
While Megan says most patients tolerate pellets well, it’s helpful to know what to expect before treatment. As with any minor procedure, you may experience temporary swelling, bleeding, or inflammation at the insertion site. It’s also worth noting that pellet dosages aren’t easily adjusted once they’re inserted, so any changes typically wait until your next treatment. Finally, because pellet therapy isn’t typically covered by insurance, most patients pay out of pocket, with costs generally ranging from $400 to $600.
You’ve likely seen acronyms like NAD and GLP-1 or buzzy ingredients like copper peptides popping up all over your social feeds. But beyond the hype, what do they actually do?
“Peptides are messengers in your body,” explains Megan. “They take a signal to exactly where it needs to go.”
As part of overall health optimization, hormones and peptides play well together. Think of their relationship in terms of fashion: if hormones are the outfit, peptides are the accessories that pull it together
Like hormones, most peptides naturally occur in your body but diminish over time due to age and lifestyle factors. Peptide therapy replenishes them, and they are available everywhere, including online. But before you click “add to cart” on that GLP-1, think twice. It might be less expensive, but you could end up paying more in the long run
“You need a medical provider,” cautions Megan, adding that when you order online, you don’t know the quality of the product. “You could be injecting water for all you know,” she warns
Furthermore, you need to ensure your body is functioning properly and you don’t have any underlying medical conditions that would prevent you from taking peptides
“You need to be optimized from a metabolic standpoint,” says Megan. “Is your cholesterol good? Is your lymphatic system strong? If you aren’t optimized, you aren’t going to get good results from the peptide.”
When properly prescribed and monitored, Megan says most peptides are incredibly safe and well-tolerated. You might experience minor site reactions or mild nausea. For those using GLP-1s, constipation is a common issue, but micro-dosing can help with that while allowing you to reap the medication’s benefits that go beyond the scale
“GLPs are about more than losing weight,” says Megan. “When used correctly, they can improve your overall health.”
Studies have shown that GLP users may notice cardiovascular benefits and a potentially decreased risk of breast cancer, dementia, and Alzheimer’s
Whether you explore hormones, peptides, or a combination of the two, make sure you go about it the right way. To truly reset your health, you need a comprehensive, functional wellness evaluation from a dedicated professional that includes lab panels, a medical history review, and lifestyle coaching
“It’s an overall wellness workup versus just going in and picking something off a menu of services,” describes Megan
Finally, hormones and peptides aren’t about instant gratification. They’re designed to support long-term wellness, and that means giving your body time to respond. While peptides may begin working within a week or two, most people notice more meaningful changes after four to six weeks. Hormone therapy often takes a little longer, but the goal isn’t just to feel better for a few days. It’s to feel better for the long haul.
As Megan puts it, “You have to be dedicated. There is no such thing as a quick fix.”
