Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

It’s back-to-school season – backpacks, supplies, new clothes – it’s all part of the excitement of going back to school after summer break.  According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), it’s important to recognize that preparing for the new school year isn’t just about having the right supplies; it’s also about ensuring mental wellness, a critical tool for mastering the upcoming academic year.

Research shows a strong link between students’ mental health and academic success, making attention to mental health a core part of every family’s back-to-school preparation

Mental Health, like every other aspect of our health from head to toe, fluctuates throughout life, influenced by situations, experiences, genetics, and resources. It’s why understanding the impact of mental health on all other functioning—learning, relationships, work—and how to be proactive in identifying and addressing symptoms is so important at every stage of life.  Focusing on mental wellness before returning to school can teach our children a positive lesson on self-regulation and navigating the stressful events they will experience throughout their lives.

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, for as many as 75% of students, the excitement of going back to school is accompanied by significant stress or emotional strain associated with the new school year, expectations around academic performance, social pressures, and extracurricular activities. Being mindful about how to support mental well-being as you prepare for the new school year can go a long way to make the experience smoother for both kids and parents.

These tips found in Easing the Back-to-School Transition on Hegira Health’s website, hegirahealth.org, can help you and your child feel more ready, confident, and calm as the new school year begins

As you head into this new school year, keep top of mind, every child adjusts at their own pace. Celebrate the small wins, keep routines consistent, and remind your child that they don’t have to be perfect; they just have to keep trying

    Start the school routine early

About one to two weeks before school starts, begin adjusting bedtime, wake-up time, and meal times to match the school schedule. A consistent routine helps children feel safe, well-rested, and ready to learn

    Talk through what’s ahead

Sometimes children don’t need us to fix the problem; they just need us to listen

Before school starts, ask open-ended but directed questions like:

•What are you looking forward to this year?

    • Is there anything you’re feeling worried or nervous about?

    • What do you think would help you feel ready?

Help your child feel familiar with school

If you can, visit the school, walk to the classroom, explore the playground, or attend an open house. If possible, arrange a playdate with a classmate before school starts. Familiar faces and places can make the first day feel less scary

    Notice changes in behavior

Children don’t always say they’re worried. Instead, stress may show up as stomachaches, trouble sleeping, clinginess, irritability, or acting out.  Respond with patience and reassurance. Let your child know it’s okay to have big feelings

    Create a homework spot

Before school starts, set up a quiet, comfortable space with the supplies your child will need. Once school begins, keep homework time balanced with breaks, movement, and play

    Keep talking about feelings

Help your child name what they’re feeling.  For example:  “It sounds like you’re feeling a little nervous about tomorrow.”  When children can name their feelings, they’re more likely to understand and manage them. Remind them that asking for help is always okay

How are schools helping parents?   According to PubMed Central of the National Institute of Health (NIH), about 80% of U.S. schools currently include mental health education in their curricula.  Parents and schools partnering together are critical for continued progress in ensuring and nurturing the mental wellness of our kids.  Supported by a growing national body of resources such as SAMHSA and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), schools are doing their part through teacher education and curriculum that promote understanding and empathy, and a supportive environment for students and families.

If you observe your child struggling to adjust to the new school year beyond the first few weeks of the school year, consider having a conversation with your pediatrician or consulting a mental health professional.  1 in 5 children in the US suffer from a diagnosable and treatable mental health condition, many of which go untreated (Annie E. Casey Foundation).  Early intervention helps children learn healthy coping habits, can minimize the impact of symptoms on school participation and performance, and prevent mild symptoms from becoming major illnesses.

If you or your children are in a mental health crisis, call 988 or go to your nearest behavioral health urgent care center or local hospital emergency department
