The Salvation Army of Holmes County moved from its former digs in Millersburg, but it didn’t have to move very far
The staff and volunteers moved all the organization’s belongings from its former area next door to the rear entrance of Faith Lutheran Church on South Clay Street
According to Salvation Army of Holmes County Director Steph Ditmars, their former home is being converted into an apartment rental unit, but fortunately, Faith Lutheran Church was there to come to their aid
“They were kind enough to allow us to use a small room off the church fellowship hall,” Ditmars said. “It’s not a huge deal, but it is important for people who utilize our services to know where to find us.”
There are signs on the former facility notifying customers the organization moved next door, as well as a sign noting their new quarters. Those stopping in may use either of the parking lots to the south or east of the church
The address remains 187 S. Clay St
The Salvation Army of Holmes County is a branch office of the Christian nonprofit Salvation Army, whose mission emphasizes aiding the poor and people in need
The Salvation Army offers human services through its programs including disaster relief and public emergency services while taking an evangelical approach
The Salvation Army of Holmes County was started by Jo Ann Ramseyer, who passed away several years ago. Stepping into her role was Ditmars, who has served as the director since. Ditmars said she was urged to become a part of the organization by Ramseyer, and while Ditmars admits she knew nothing about it when she began her stint, taking on the role of director has been gratifying because of the way Salvation Army invests in those in the community who are struggling.
“What we do for people financially isn’t a lot, but for those who do seek help from us, it is an important time in their life,” Ditmars said. “Last year we helped more than 200 individuals and their families pay utility bills and things like that. We may not provide a lot, but for those in need at that moment, it means the world to them.”
It may seem like a small amount, but when someone is struggling financially, that moment of relief and the knowledge someone cares are vitally important
“When we help keep the electric on, that’s a big deal,” Ditmars said
She said the organization continues to seek volunteers, noting it is a rewarding yet simple way to play a role in serving those in the community
Anyone who would like to request financial aid or has an interest in volunteering should call The Salvation Army of Holmes County at 330-675-5151. If it is after hours, leave a message
“We love and appreciate all our volunteers,” Ditmars said
The office is open from 9-11:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Anyone seeking aid needs to bring a recent utility bill
