SANDPOINT — Bonner General Health is expanding access to specialty care in North Idaho with the addition of urologist Ron Barrett, MD, and the opening of Bonner General Urology on Aug. 24

The new clinic will provide comprehensive urologic care for both men and women, bringing an important specialty closer to home for patients throughout the region

“Throughout my career, I’ve cared for many patients from rural communities who often traveled long distances for specialty care,” said Dr. Barrett. “I’m excited to bring essential urologic services closer to home and to make a direct impact on the health and quality of life in the Sandpoint area.”

Urology is a medical and surgical specialty focused on conditions affecting the urinary tract in both men and women. At Bonner General Urology, Dr. Barrett will evaluate and treat a range of common urologic concerns, including kidney stones, bladder conditions, blood in the urine, prostate-related urinary concerns, benign prostate enlargement, bladder cancer, recurrent urinary tract infections, urinary changes and difficulties, and testicular concerns. Vasectomy services will also be available.

While urology is often associated with men’s health and prostate care, Dr. Barrett emphasizes that urologists also play an important role in women’s health. Women may see a urologist for conditions such as kidney stones, bladder problems, blood in the urine, recurrent urinary tract infections and other urinary health concerns

“As we age, urinary issues often become more noticeable,” Dr. Barrett said. “Many urologic concerns are common and treatable and are not simply something people have to live with.”

Dr. Barrett grew up in Warwick, New York, and initially pursued a career in engineering before returning to school to study medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and completed his urology residency in 2002. He practiced for many years in a multispecialty group in Scranton, Pennsylvania, before moving west with his family in 2014. Outside of medicine, he and his wife, Julianne, enjoy skiing, kayaking, hiking and camping with their dog, Sprint.

“The addition of urology is an important expansion of specialty care for Bonner General Health and the communities we serve,” said Dr. Stacey Good, chief medical officer at Bonner General Health. “Urologic conditions are common, particularly as people age, and having Dr. Barrett here means patients can receive evaluation and treatment closer to home. Just as importantly, his surgical expertise expands the range of urologic procedures we can provide locally, giving our patients more options to receive the care they need without having to travel outside the community.”

Bonner General Urology is located at 423 N. Third Ave., Suite 110, in Sandpoint. The clinic will be open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patients should contact their primary care provider for a referral
