Washington County Health and Human Services continues to strengthen its commitment to those who have served our nation by launching a free monthly Mental Health Skills Group designed specifically for veterans and active service members beginning Monday, Oct. 5
Guardrail, a mental health skills group, provides a welcoming, confidential environment where participants can gain practical tools to strengthen everyday coping skills, improve emotional health and build supportive connections with fellow veterans. The group is open to veterans and active-duty service members of all ages and military branches, regardless of whether they are currently receiving behavioral health services.
Sessions are facilitated by a licensed behavioral health therapist and focus on topics including:
Managing stress and anxiety
Building healthy relationships and social connections
Improving mental and physical wellness
Developing emotional resilience
Problem-solving and life skills
Maintaining motivation and healthy routines
Additional topics identified by participating veterans
Recognizing that many veterans face challenges related to stress, life transitions, relationships, emotional wellness and maintaining healthy routines, Washington County is expanding opportunities for veterans to connect with one another while learning practical skills that promote resilience and overall mental wellness
The program reflects the County’s ongoing investment in innovative, community-based behavioral health initiatives that improve access to care, reduce stigma and support the long-term well-being of those who have sacrificed in service to our country
“Many veterans are accustomed to solving problems on their own, but we also know the value of having a strong team,” said Kurt Rusch, Washington County Veterans Service Officer. “This group offers practical skills that veterans can apply in their everyday lives while providing an opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences. Whether someone is facing a difficult time or simply wants to continue growing personally, everyone is welcome.”
Washington County continues to expand its comprehensive approach to veteran services by bringing together behavioral health professionals, the Veterans Service Office and community partners to improve access to care before challenges become crises. By investing in prevention, early intervention and peer connection, the County is helping veterans build resilience while strengthening the support network available throughout the community.
“Those who served our country deserve more than our gratitude, they deserve access to quality services that help them live healthy, successful lives,” said Josh Schoemann, Washington County Executive. “As a fellow veteran, I’m proud that Washington County continues to develop programs that meet veterans where they are, remove barriers to care and demonstrate our commitment to supporting them well beyond their military service.”
