LEXINGTON, Va. (WDBJ) -The Rockbridge Area Health Center is offering safe sleep education and other maternal and infant health services through a new Perinatal Health Hub, created with funding from the Virginia Department of Health
VDH contributed funding earlier this year to RAHC to support the creation of the hub, with the goal of strengthening care for Virginia families before, during and after childbirth. It is one of four Perinatal Health Hubs across the state
October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness Month. SIDS stands for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, defined as the unexpected death of an infant under 1 year old with no known apparent cause. SIDS is a cause of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death, or SUID, which also includes accidental suffocation in a sleeping environment and other deaths from unknown causes
Practicing safe sleep habits and breastfeeding both lower a baby’s risk of SIDS
A safe sleep environment follows the ABCs of safe sleep: alone, on their back, in a crib. Other recommendations include reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, not smoking during pregnancy, breastfeeding when able, and keeping up to date on recommended vaccines
RAHC provides prenatal care starting from the first pregnancy test and postpartum care starting at two days old
Through its new Perinatal Health Hub, RAHC also offers free safe sleep education, maternal support groups, perinatal community health workers and free cribettes for those in need
