NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) —Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell announced that a committee will study the future of Nashville General Hospital, including its facilities, location and partnership with Meharry Medical College
The committee will bring together civic leaders, health care experts and community stakeholders to develop recommendations for the city’s public hospital. O’Connell said he hopes the group will finish its work in about six to eight months

The committee will consider where patients’ needs are greatest and whether the hospital’s current facilities can meet those needs. O’Connell said the city has not decided whether Nashville General should stay at its current location or move
The review will also examine the hospital’s relationship with Meharry. Nashville General is leasing space from the medical college, and O’Connell said the city wants the hospital’s plans to align with Meharry’s vision

Hospital CEO Dr. Elders said Nashville General serves patients regardless of their ability to pay. O’Connell said the hospital provides about $60 million in uncompensated care each year and its food pharmacy has distributed more than 700,000 meals
The mayor said the goal is to develop a plan that supports patient care and the hospital’s role in Nashville’s health care system while keeping public costs reasonable. The committee’s membership had not been finalized at the time of the announcement
