Samsung isrolling out an improved sleep apnea detection feature to its latest wearable devices. The feature is coming to the Galaxy Watch 9, Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, and Galaxy Ring in the US and South Korea
Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person’s breathing stops and starts repeatedly during sleep. Samsung’s new feature helps users check for possible signs of this problem by tracking their sleep
The upgraded system checks changes in blood oxygen levels and breathing patterns over two sleep sessions within a 10-day period. It can also show how serious the breathing problems may be instead of giving only a simple yes-or-no result
Samsung has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). The feature will be available through an update to the Samsung Health Monitor app
The Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 are getting the update first. Samsung has also confirmed that older models, including the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 8 series, will receive the feature through future software updates
The update is also important for Galaxy Ring users. The Galaxy Ring has become the first commercial smart ring to receive regulatory approval for sleep apnea tracking. This is useful for people who find smartwatches uncomfortable while sleeping
Samsung’s new feature will help users keep a better check on their sleep health. It can help them notice possible breathing problems and seek medical advice when needed. However, it does not replace a doctor’s diagnosis
