If you care about your health, it is best to start by reducing your candy intake. This is because excessive consumption of snacks high in sugar and saturated fat can negatively affect the balance of the gut microbiome.According to the foreign media outlet ScienceAlert, Christopher Damman, a gastroenterologist and gut microbiome researcher at the University of Washington School of Medicine in the United States, recently said, “Eating too much candy can disrupt the gut microbiome environment.”The gut microbiome is involved in the digestion and metabolism of food and also plays an important role in maintaining immune function. In particular, it helps break down dietary fiber to produce beneficial metabolic products. However, the large amounts of sugar, saturated fat and additives in candy negatively affect the gut microbial ecosystem. Christopher Damman said, “These changes may weaken the intestinal barrier and promote inflammatory responses.”When the balance of the gut microbiome is disrupted, it can affect not only gut health but also metabolic health, including blood sugar control and weight management. In fact, a study published in the international journal Nature Communications in 2024 analyzed gut microbiome functions and metabolic health indicators in about 8,859 adults. The results showed significant associations between the genes and metabolic pathways of gut bacteria and various indicators, including body mass index, BMI, blood sugar control and liver health. When you crave a snack, look at the nutrients contained in the food along with its sugar content. Healthy snacks include fruit, nuts and dark chocolate. In particular, dark chocolate contains dietary fiber and polyphenols, so consuming it in moderation may have a positive effect on the gut microbiome environment. If you have already eaten sweet snacks such as candy, it is a good idea to consume sufficient dietary fiber, unsaturated fatty acids and fermented foods. Examples include berries, extra-virgin olive oil, avocados and salmon. However, this does not mean that you should eat a large amount of a particular food all at once. You should consume a variety of foods evenly and maintain balanced eating habits in your daily life. Christopher Damman said, “It is most important to control your usual snack intake and maintain a balanced diet.”
