I want to introduce you to the sandwich generation. It’s not a network TV show, or anything fun involving sourdough and ham. It’s a complex stage of life no one talks about. And there’s a good chance you’re already in the thick of it – without realising
The sandwich generation isn’t a literal generation like boomers or millennials. Instead, it’s the term used to describe a group of adults – typically between the ages of 30 and 60 – who are caring for both their aging parentsandtheir own children. They’re mostly likely working full time, and are stretched too thing trying to juggle it all.
It’s called the sandwich generation because you’re literally sandwiched between two types of responsibilities. I told you it didn’t involve any fun, artisanal sourdough. It’s giving Fyre Fest cheese sandwich.
It could easily be called ‘the candle generation’ too. Essentially, for those of us in it, we’re burning the candle at both ends and expecting –hoping– to survive.
Does this describe your life right now? If so, welcome. If not, I’m jealous.
For me, it’s a relief to know what this phase is called – and to know that I’m not alone in it
