Growing body of clinical research points to favorable effects on glucose, insulin and cardiometabolic health

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — With more than 2 in 5 U.S. adults living with prediabetes¹, blood sugar is a growing health concern, and one that can raise questions about where naturally sweet foods like fruit fit into the American diet. Research is helping challenge some of those assumptions, revealing how sweetness alone may not tell the whole story about fresh mango’s mix of nutrients and bioactive compounds.

More than 20 published, peer-reviewed studies have explored mango’s effects from a single meal to six months of daily intake, including among people at increased metabolic risk with prediabetes or overweight and obesity. Research also spans key stages in women’s health, from the childbearing years through post-menopause, among others. While further research is necessary for broader applicability, these findings contribute to the growing evidence linking mango consumption to cardiometabolic benefits.

Mango and Blood Glucose ControlHow efficiently the body manages glucose and insulin is an important part of metabolic health, particularly for people with prediabetes or overweight and obesity, and plays a role in how the body accesses and uses energy

In a six-month randomized controlled trial, adults with prediabetes who ate two cups of fresh mango daily had lower fasting glucose and improved insulin sensitivity, while maintaining stable HbA1c, compared with a calorically comparable control.²

Among generally healthy adults, a single serving of fresh mango resulted in a more favorable post-meal glucose response compared with a control.⁵ Studies in adults with overweight or obesity found improved insulin sensitivity and beta-cell function after four weeks of daily mango consumption³ and more favorable post-meal glucose responses following longer-term intake.⁴

A recent review of the broader body of mango research also found a pattern of favorable glucose and insulin outcomes across both acute and longer-term studies.⁶

Blood Flow and Cardiometabolic HealthHealthy blood flow helps deliver glucose, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Mango consumption has also been linked to favorable changes in blood pressure and other markers of vascular health

Studies in adults with overweight or obesity found reductions in systolic blood pressure and favorable changes in a marker (VCAM-1) associated with blood vessel inflammation.⁴˒⁸

Research combining mango with avocado found additional vascular benefits. A recent 8-week research study co-funded by the Hass Avocado Board and the National Mango Board found that, among a sample of 82 adults with prediabetes, consuming both avocado and mango daily improved vascular function and diastolic blood pressure.⁷

Mango and Women’s HealthAmong postmenopausal women with overweight or obesity, mango consumption was also associated with lower glucose and insulin responses compared to the control, reductions in total and LDL cholesterol and favorable changes in blood pressure.⁹

An analysis of NHANES data offers another perspective among women of childbearing age. Fresh mango eaters had higher overall diet quality and higher intakes of nutrients including fiber and vitamin C, while consuming less added sugar than non-eaters.¹⁰

Nutrients Beyond Natural SweetnessMango’s natural sugars are part of a whole fruit nutrition package, alongside bioactive plant compounds. A ¾-cup serving provides 50% of the Daily Value (DV) for vitamin C, along with 15% DV for folate, 15% DV for copper and 2 grams of fiber (7% DV). With mango, natural sweetness is only part of the nutritional story

A Growing Picture of Mango and Metabolic HealthNatural sweetness alone in a fruit like mango isn’t the full story when it comes to blood sugar and cardiometabolic health. Considering the whole nutritional profile can offer a more complete picture of how fresh mango fits into a healthful diet. Learn more about mango nutrition at Mango.org
