Women’s metabolic health spotlighted in new Maven Clinic research on care gaps

A new conversation around women’s metabolic and hormonal health is highlighting persistent gaps in how the healthcare system supports women across life stages

Dr. Janelle Duah, MD — a Yale-trained, triple board-certified internal medicine physician and Associate Medical Director at Maven Clinic — joined Sierra Waggoner on We Are Austin to discuss findings from a new survey examining women’s experiences with hormone care, GLP-1 medications, and metabolic health treatment

The research, commissioned by Maven’s Clinical Research Institute and conducted through Beyond the Script, found that many women feel their care is fragmented or inconsistent, particularly when managing conditions tied to hormones, weight, and metabolism. According to the findings, a significant portion of women reported that symptoms were often treated separately rather than as interconnected issues, leaving gaps in follow-up care and long-term support.

The study also highlighted a disconnect between patients and providers, with many women expressing a desire for more coordinated, whole-person care. Providers themselves cited time constraints and gaps in training as barriers to fully addressing overlapping hormonal, metabolic, and mental health concerns

Dr. Duah, who specializes in metabolic health, obesity medicine, and comprehensive women’s health, spoke about the importance of integrating care across nutrition, movement, sleep, and behavioral health to better support outcomes for women navigating complex conditions such as PCOS, menopause, and postpartum health

Maven Clinic, founded in 2014 by Kate Ryder, provides virtual care across more than 30 specialties and serves members in over 175 countries. The platform also partners with employers and health plans to expand access to personalized women’s and family care
