With the Pixel Watch 5, Google has announced Health Guardian, a new suite of tools designed to provide proactive health monitoring. The company is adding blood pressure and insulin resistance trends to the Google Health app. The features use data collected by compatible smartwatches to estimate whether insulin resistance is higher or lower over a period. The planned rollout is scheduled for September 2026 and will also extend to the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4.
Google Pixel Watch 5 gets insulin resistance tracking: Here’s how it works
Originally developed with people with diabetes in mind, the insulin resistance feature is designed to provide insights into metabolic health without requiring a needle or direct blood sugar measurement. The feature is particularly relevant in India, where diabetes and metabolic health concerns affect a large population
Google says the feature analyses physiological data collected by the smartwatch over multiple weeks and looks for changes in signals associated with metabolic health. It requires at least a week of data to identify sustained changes that could indicate increased insulin resistance
However, the feature does not continuously display blood glucose levels like a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). A CGM uses a sensor inserted under the skin to measure glucose levels. Instead, Google’s feature is designed to act as an early warning system, potentially highlighting changes that may encourage users to pay attention to factors such as nutrition, sleep and physical activity
Blood pressure monitoring also coming to Pixel Watch
Alongside insulin resistance trends, Google is introducing blood pressure monitoring as part of its Health Guardian suite. The company says these tools are intended to help users understand changes in their health over time rather than provide a clinical diagnosis
Google has also clarified that the new health monitoring features are not substitutes for diagnostic tools. Users requiring medical assessment or diagnosis should consult a healthcare professional
The Blood Pressure and Insulin Trends features are scheduled to become available from September 2026 on the Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5, as well as the Fitbit Air
