Registration is now open for free workshops being offered as part of the first-ever Mind Over Music Mental Health Festival
The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Vernon & District event is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 26 in Polson Park
A first-of-its-kind event in the North Okanagan, Mind Over Music brings together live music, creative expression, community connection and mental health education in a unique festival setting designed to spark conversations, reduce stigma, and promote well-being
Workshop space is limited, and organizers are encouraging community members to register early
“Mind Over Music is more than a music festival. It’s an opportunity for people to experience the connection between creativity and mental wellness,” said Vicki Proulx, director of fund development and communications at CMHA Vernon & District. “We’re thrilled to offer these workshops free of charge and invite people of all ages to participate, learn new skills, and connect with others in a supportive environment.”
The festival will feature two, one-hour workshop sessions, each offering a selection of concurrent workshops led by local artists, facilitators and wellness advocates
Participants will be able to choose from a variety of topics, including storytelling and songwriting, community drumming, mindful photography, nervous system regulation, emotional expression through music, whole-body wellness, and other creative approaches to healing and resilience
A release from CMHA Vernon & District said the workshops are designed for diverse audiences, including youth, families, adults and community members of all ages
In addition to the workshops, attendees can take in a full day of live performances beginning in the morning and continuing into the evening
Festival-goers will also have the opportunity to explore community activities, wellness booths, vendors and interactive art spaces throughout the day
The festival concludes with an evening concert featuring headliner Appaloosa Band. Admission to the concert is by donation, with all proceeds supporting Foundry North Okanagan, helping strengthen access to youth and young adult mental health and wellness services in the region
“Every donation made through the concert helps support young people on their mental health journey,” said Proulx. “By attending, community members are not only enjoying great music, they’re helping ensure youth have access to the care and supports they need for years to come.”
“Mind Over Music reflects CMHA Vernon & District’s commitment to promoting mental health where people live, work, learn, and play while demonstrating the powerful role music, art and creativity can have in healing, connection, and community well-being,” the release said
Community members can now register for workshops and explore the complete festival music lineup online
