The hidden connection between sleep and women’s memory

A restless night may feel like little more than an exhausting inconvenience. But for some older women, repeated sleep problems could be telling a deeper story about the brain

A new study published in the August 2026 issue of The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease suggests that poor sleep may be linked with weaker memory and early brain changes among older women who already carry a higher inherited risk of Alzheimer’s disease

Researchers studied 69 women aged 65 and above. The participants reported how well they slept and completed memory tests, while 63 also underwent brain scans. Among women with a higher inherited risk, those reporting poorer sleep tended to perform worse when remembering visual information. Their scans also showed more build-up of a harmful substance in areas of the brain affected during the earlier stages of Alzheimer’s.

Interestingly, the same pattern was not seen among women with lower inherited risk. Poor sleep was also not clearly linked with every type of memory tested

The findings do not mean that sleepless nights cause Alzheimer’s. The study was small, most participants were White, and researchers relied partly on how women described their own sleep. Larger and more diverse studies are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn

Still, the research adds to a growing reason to treat sleep as part of healthy ageing rather than a luxury. Women often experience changes in sleep as they grow older, particularly around and after menopause, yet persistent sleep problems can easily be dismissed as normal

For readers in Bangladesh, the message is simple: chronic poor sleep deserves attention. Regular sleep hours, less screen time before bed, daytime activity and seeking medical advice for persistent insomnia or heavy snoring may help protect overall health

A good night’s sleep cannot guarantee protection from dementia. But caring for sleep may be one of the simplest ways to care for the ageing brain over an entire lifetime
