What if sleep could protect your brain after injury?

New research from Florida International University is uncovering how sleep quality after traumatic brain injury (TBI) may be the key to preventing seizures and reducing the risk of post-traumatic epilepsy. Scientists are exploring how sleep, brain rewiring, and innovative treatments like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) work together to safeguard brain health

In this video, we break down the science, and the hope, for millions affected by TBI and epilepsy

You’ll learn: the hidden link between sleep and seizures, how brain injuries can lead to epilepsy, what cutting-edge research says about prevention and how TMS could revolutionize brain recovery

Sleep is not just rest. It’s medicine for the brain. We already know that good sleep helps us think clearly and feel better. Now, we’re also learning that after brain injury, it can protect the brain from long-term damage

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by spontaneous, unprovoked, and recurrent seizures

Typically in research, sleep and epilepsy, or traumatic brain injury and epilepsy, are studied separately. In our research, we are putting two problems together to establish the causative and mechanistic link between chronic sleep disruption, traumatic brain injury, and ultimately the development of post-traumatic epilepsy

A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. They may range from sudden and very brief staring spells up to full-body convulsions. Approximately 1% of the population is affected by epilepsy, and there are various types of epilepsy and various causes. Genetic causes result from a mutation of a specific gene causing an epileptic syndrome. And there are also acquired causes throughout life, with traumatic brain injury being the leading cause of acquired epilepsy. Once post-traumatic epilepsy develops, this is a lifelong condition. That’s why what we want to know is how to predict which individuals are at greater risk for developing post-traumatic epilepsy. And most importantly, can we prevent it?

Sleep and epilepsy are closely connected. Sleep deprivation, for example, is a known risk factor or even trigger of seizures in people with epilepsy. On the other hand, for someone with epilepsy, the more seizures they have, the worse their sleep becomes. Because of this strong relationship and link between sleep and epilepsy, improving sleep quality can help reduce the risk of seizures

The brain rewires itself constantly. Our mission is to guide this process through controlled neuromodulation — not just to control epilepsy, but to prevent it. We hypothesized that the use of transcranial magnetic brain stimulation, or TMS, can help stabilize brain activity by improving sleep quality and ultimately preventing the development of seizures after traumatic brain injury

If we prove in our research that better sleep can prevent the development of post-traumatic epilepsy or reduce the risk of seizures, we can potentially revolutionize how we treat brain injury, reshaping the future of brain injury care

For too long, women have walked into doctors’ offices describing brain fog, exhaustion, mood swings, low libido, and sleep that refuses to come, only to hear the same tired explanations: it’s stress, it’s your age, it’s in your head. It is a pattern documented in peer-reviewed research on gender bias in symptom reporting, where women…
