DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – As back-to-school season approaches, local health experts say families should prioritize getting students back on a healthy sleep schedule

    Back to school tips(NNN)

Dr. Marit Knutson, a pediatrician with Essentia Health, said parents should start gradually shifting their children’s bedtimes and wake-up times earlier by 15 to 20 minutes each day. She noted that the best time to begin implementing this routine is a few weeks before school begins

“As we all know, if you wake up early for something that you haven’t acclimated to, it’s just a really stark contrast and you don’t have the energy you need for the day,” Dr. Knutson said. “For kids to go back to being in school all day and learning all day, they really need all that energy and just the reserves from a good night of sleep.”

Knutson added that she is not opposed to using magnesium or short-term sleep supplements to help children ease back into their school-year routines
