Richmond police officer shot by woman during mental wellness check

A 20-year veteran Richmond police officer is recovering in serious condition after being shot by a woman Wednesday night while responding to a mental health crisis call

RICHMOND, Calif. -A woman shot a Richmond officer – and then started wildly firing off her gun – while he was responding to a mental health crisis call, police said.

    What we know:

The scene from a shooting in Richmond where a woman shot an officer. Sept. 3, 2026

According to Richmond police, Contra Costa County’s A3 Crisis Response team was dispatched about 6:40 p.m. to a home in the 2200 block of Key Boulevard to conduct a welfare check. It’s not clear who made this call for the mental wellness check.

The A-3 team, which serves as the city’s behavioral health crisis response program, requested police assistance due to the nature of the call

Almost immediately, a woman barricaded inside the home opened fire on the responding officer, striking him, police said

She then continued firing in multiple directions, hitting surrounding homes, vehicles and even a patrol car, police said. No other residents or responding personnel were injured.

Police set up a command post at a nearby Grocery Outlet, though no bullets made their way to the shopping center

At a news conference, Richmond Police Chief Tim Simmons said she was firing “indiscriminately” from inside the house

Fortunately, the officer is expected to survive, Simmons said. And police stressed that at no time did officers fire their own weapons back at her.

Richmond police officer Justin Church, who was shot by a woman during a wellness check, police say, was relesaed from the hospital one-day later.

Officer to survive, woman arrested and charged

    What they’re saying:

“I am extremely grateful that our officer is expected to survive, and that no resident or assisting personnel were injured in this incident,” Simmons said at a news conference. Given the number of rounds fired, this incident could have ended with many additional injuries or several losses of life.”

The SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called out, and at some point, Simmons said police threw chemical agents into the home

    The woman eventually came out

    She was taken into custody.

On Friday, Richmond police identified the woman as 39-year-old Jasmine Robinson of Richmond.

Police said Robinson has been charged with attempted murder, assault with an assault weapon on a person and kidnapping. She remains in custody on $500,000 bail.

The officer who was shot has been identified as Justin Church, a 25-year law-enforcement veteran. He was released from the hospital at around 3 p.m. on Friday.
