Construction complete on new mental health centre at Guelph General Hospital

A new and improved mental health and addictions centre at Guelph General Hospital will begin operating later this month now that construction is complete
Guelph General Hospital (GGH), the Homewood Health Centre, and the Foundation of GGH held a celebration this week to mark the milestone on the project
The Angel Gabriel Foundation Centre for Mental Health and Addictions is located within the main hospital building and features an expanded assessment unit that doubles capacity
The hospital’s emergency mental health and addictions services were relocated and redeveloped to help meet increasing needs and strengthen patient care
“We were pleased to tour the redesigned space earlier this week with the Minister of Health and Deputy Premier, Sylvia Jones, and share how our teams will be better able to support patients in both individual and group settings,” said Mark Walton, President and CEO of Guelph General Hospital, in a release. “This space will help patients stabilize sooner and return safely to the community.”
GGH received approval from the province last April for the redevelopment project, which includes improvements for the emergency department and a new garage for ambulances
While construction on the mental health and addictions centre is complete, the hospital says further improvements are planned in the coming months
As the overall work continues, GGH is stressing that its ER remains open and available, but parking may be challenging and visitors are urged to plan ahead
