ORANGE PARK – The people with scientific expertise used their empirical data to explain eTMS treatments with words like encoding speeds, hertz brain, prefrontal vortex, TMS magnet and qEEG
The people with badges, guns and a background in the military just know it works
The revolutionary therapy for first responders and military members was unveiled during an announcement on Friday, Sept. 25. By working to improve the wellness of those who’ve served the community, the non-evasive treatment has become a fresh response for individualized care for anxiety, depression, insomnia and substance cravings
“You want the cop’s explanation? They put a paddle on your head, and they scramble your brain,” Sheriff Michelle Cook said. “I know it makes you feel better. We’ll let the experts talk about that. Literally, something’s put on your head and it clicks. It’s a series of 20 treatments, and I’ve gone to six, and I already say that I’m sleeping better. I already see that my stress level is better.
“What I love about it, is it takes 15 minutes a session, but I saw results after the third session. I started sleeping better, feeling better. In fact, two nights ago, I got the best night sleep I’ve had in 20 years.”
With grant money provided by the State of Florida, eTMS treatment in Clay County will be restricted to members of CCSO, Green Cove Springs and Orange Park police departments, Clay County Fire Rescue and veterans who are referred by Operation Barnabas, a nonprofit that provides housing, employment and mentorships to veterans in need. Florida Reps. Sam Garrison and Judson Sapp, along with Florida Sen. Jennifer Bradley were instrumental in securing the funding.
According to eTMS Florida, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is based on a sophisticated diagnostics to treat neurological conditions. Treatment starts with a quantitative electroencephalogram to identify patterns of dysfunction in the brain, including learning and behavioral issues, emotional disorders, brain injury and others
The equipment is FDA-cleared, and it generates magnetic waves that measures hertz levels in the back, middle and front of the brain
“We do an qEEG on Day 1, and then an EEG on Day 10, and then an EEG on Day 20,” said eTMS Florida’s Brandon. “So that way, not only anecdotally, we are getting the veteran, police or first responders telling us daily. We can actually see the actual mathematical equation, the change, and that’s where the light bulb goes off on the sleep, and on the responsibility
“We’re getting a 60% response rate in all these different communications. And again, we don’t care what the diagnosis is. We just want to put the brain back in order; we just want to get everything back into sync.”
If there are different hertz levels, technicians know that’s where there is dysfunction. Brandon, who didn’t want his last name revealed, said if the hertz brain level at the back and middle part of the brain are a 10 and the front is a three, they can use a TMS magnet to target treatment
“It is an important function in ensuring that our first responders across the area are prepared to respond in an emergency,” said CCFR Chief Lorin Mock
According to eTMS Florida, the company has already seen 3,728 responders and veterans. They’ve made 115,229 assessments that have resulted in 64.5% positive results for anxiety, 63% for post-traumatic stress disorder, 62.4% improvement for depression, 59.7% for sleeping disorders, 57% reduction of opioid and 49.7% reduction in alcohol cravings
“It’s only fair for us as a state to ensure they are well equipped as they possibly can be, to provide the service after and they would be called to do whatever professionally
“Florida is the No. 1 state in the nation for military veterans,” Garrison said. “We know what these warriors have had to deal with on our behalf, throughout the world. The scars they bring back with them are always just visible. The things we can do to help these folks get something that’s as basic as a good night’s sleep, it’s critical. There’s nothing earth shattering in this treatment we’re doing. [What] we’re trying to do is use modern science and modern technology to allow those folks who are on the front lines for us, to let their bodies heal, their minds, their soul heal to be at their best.”
Garrison also said providing treatment to reduce the mental and emotional clutter is no different than giving first responders and veterans the support they need most
“We talk an awful lot about making sure that the sheriff here in Clay County, or state law enforcement, or Sheriff [T.K.] Waters up in Jacksonville, we want to get them all the tools they need to be successful. And a lot of times that’s physical things, making sure they have the body armor they need, making sure they have the weaponry they need, making sure they have the communication support they need. But at the end of the day, public safety is a human endeavor. It’s flesh and blood, men and women, that answer the call.”
