IIT Bombay introduces wellness reforms: New mental health support, hostel changes and exam schedule under review
IIT Bombay is planning changes to support student wellness, improve hostel facilities, upgrade mess services and rethink examination schedules after the suicide case of a 19-year- student in September
The incident sparked protests and brought attention to mental health issues and how academic misconduct cases are managed on campus
The institute is moving forward with reforms aimed at making life better for students. One key change is the introduction of a leadership position focused solely on student well-being. This role will oversee efforts to support health and overall student welfare across the campus
However, some of these proposals are still under discussion. IIT Bombay is planning changes to student wellness, hostel facilities, mess services and examination schedules after a student died on campus. Here is what students need to know about the changes that are being considered
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is preparing to introduce a set of changes to improve student well-being, hostel life and the pressure of academics on campus
The changes that are being considered include a position for student wellness, wellness representatives in hostels, changes to mess services and a look at examination schedules
This announcement is coming after the death of a 19-year- student in September which led to protests and alarming attention on student mental health and how academic misconduct is handled. These changes will happen in stages with some ideas still being under discussion
One of the changes being considered is a new role for an associate dean for student wellness. This position is expected to help bring the institute’s administration, faculty members, counsellors and other support services for students
IIT Bombay is also planning to reorganize its support system for student wellness. The institute has said that the full plan will be rolled out in stages with the steps expected to start during the week of October 5
Another idea is to have wellness secretaries in each hostel. These people could help students share their problems and make it easier for them to find help within their living communities. The goal is to make student wellness an important part of daily life, on campus instead of only focusing on it when something serious happens
The institute is also reviewing the examination schedule. The exact revised dates and the final examination timetable will depend on the institute’s decision
Students should therefore keep following updates from IIT Bombay’s Academic Office
The institute is also discussing proposed measures to stop unfair means during examinations. A first draft of these measures is reportedly ready for discussion at an emergency Senate meeting
These discussions come after a September incident where a student was reportedly found using a phone during an examination. IIT Bombay said at that time that no disciplinary action had been started against the student and that the matter had been talked about with the student by the instructor and department head
The incident was followed by the student’s death and protests on campus. The episode has raised questions about how the institute can uphold examination rules while ensuring that students receive proper support during stressful times
Changes to hostel facilities are another part of the proposed reforms. IIT Bombay is looking into ways to replace ceiling-mounted fans in hostel rooms and has asked students for their opinions on different setups
Options being looked at include wall-mounted fans, pedestal fans, table fans and desk fans instead of the traditional ceiling fans. The institute is collecting opinions to find out which setups would work best for rooms and for different student needs
However, these options are not the final choice. The reports show that the institute is still looking at all the possibilities and is still getting feedback. The main goal is to look at the conditions in the hostels and to ensure students welfare
IIT Bombay is also working on changes to its mess system. The plan is meant to allow students more choice in how they get their meals even though the exact arrangements and how they will be put into place will be decided by the institute
There are also plans to make better areas for students to relax and have fun in the hostels like play areas. All these changes will help students with a break and better social life on campus with peers other than regular lectures and lab practicals
IIT Bombay already has a Student Wellness Centre (SWC), offering individual counselling, group therapy, mindfulness workshops, peer support and other wellness programmes
According to the centre’s official website, students can book counselling appointments and access walk-in support with a 24-hour crisis helpline at 08047136761
Students experiencing emotional distress can seek help directly instead of waiting for a problem to become overwhelming
The new reforms would build on this existing support system by strengthening it and making student mental health a more important part of institutional decision-making
Competitive examinations, grades, financial conditions, isolation and uncertainty about the future can affect students in different ways. Therefore, the Ministry of Education’s National (MENTF) Task Force on student mental health highlighted the need to strengthen support systems in educational institutions
It has published rental well-being of students in higher education institutions
While counselling services are available, students still feel uncomfortable asking for help, thus, IIT Bombay’s new reforms will measure the effectiveness of how well they are implemented, and whether students trust the support available to them or not
For now, several changes are still under consideration. Students should regularly check the official announcements for examination dates, hostel arrangements and the rollout of the wellness initiatives
