Short bursts of exercise spread throughout the day may improve cardiorespiratory fitness and some measures of metabolic health in sedentary adults, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Nutrition

Known as “exercise snacks,” these brief bouts of structured physical activity typically last only a few minutes and are performed intermittently rather than as one continuous workout. Researchers say the approach could help people who struggle to fit longer exercise sessions into their daily routines

The review included 22 studies involving 994 sedentary or inactive adults. Eighteen were randomized controlled trials, while four were non-randomized studies. Exercise interventions lasted from just one day to 12 weeks and varied considerably in type, frequency and duration

Exercise snacks were associated with significant improvements in maximal and peak oxygen uptake, measures of cardiorespiratory fitness. However, the apparent improvement in maximal oxygen uptake was no longer statistically significant after researchers adjusted for publication bias

Short exercise bouts were also associated with improved blood glucose and triglyceride levels. However, researchers found no significant improvements in body fat, muscle mass, insulin levels or muscle strength

The certainty of evidence varied. It was moderate for maximal oxygen uptake but low or very low for most other outcomes. Several studies also had methodological limitations, and substantial differences between exercise protocols made the results difficult to compare

The findings suggest that brief activity breaks may offer a practical way to reduce some health risks associated with prolonged sitting, particularly by improving fitness and glucose regulation. However, exercise snacks should not yet be viewed as a proven replacement for established physical activity recommendations

The researchers emphasize that longer and better-designed studies are needed to determine whether these short activity bouts produce lasting improvements in metabolic and physical health
