What is the best time to get sunlight? Hyderabad doctor explains when to step out for vitamin D, better sleep and metabolic health

Hyderabad doctor explains why morning sunlight supports sleep and metabolic health, while midday exposure is more effective for vitamin D production.

Sunlight is often treated as a simple part of a morning walk, but the timing of exposure can matter. Early daylight helps the body maintain its internal clock, while stronger midday sunlight is generally more useful for making vitamin D. Hyderabad-based neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar highlighted this distinction in an October 7 post on X, explaining why sunlight exposure can serve different health goals.

Morning sunlight may help regulate sleep

Morning sunlight may help regulate sleep

Dr Kumar recommended getting outdoor daylight within one to two hours after sunrise, generally between 6:30 am and 8:30 am. Morning light helps synchronise the body’s circadian rhythm, the internal clock that influences alertness, sleep and other daily functions.Dr Kumar suggested 20-30 minutes of morning daylight daily. The ideal duration can vary with weather, location and individual circumstances.

When should people step out for vitamin D?

For vitamin D production, the timing is different. The skin needs ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation to produce vitamin D, and these rays are generally more available when the sun is a little higher in the sky.Dr Kumar identified 11 am to 1:30 pm as a useful window for this purpose. He suggested 15-30 minutes of exposure, at least three to four times a week, with around 20-30% of the skin exposed. However, this is not a universal prescription. UV intensity, skin pigmentation, clothing, season and location all affect vitamin D production. Stronger midday sunlight also raises the risk of sunburn, so exposure should not be prolonged simply to increase vitamin D levels.

    4/5

Does early morning sunlight have no benefit for vitamin D?

Not necessarily. Early morning light remains valuable for regulating the body clock, even when UVB levels are too low for substantial vitamin D production.A morning walk should not automatically be considered sufficient to prevent or correct vitamin D deficiency. People with suspected deficiency may need medical advice and, where appropriate, a blood test

What about metabolic health and blood pressure?

Dr Kumar also linked morning daylight with mood, daytime alertness and metabolic health. Light exposure can influence circadian rhythms, which in return, helps coordinate sleep and the body’s daily metabolic processes. He also mentioned nitric oxide release in the skin, which may contribute to blood pressure regulation. However, sunlight should not be treated as a replacement for prescribed blood pressure treatment, regular exercise or a balanced diet.
