LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Sleep is one of the fire service’s biggest health threats, and researchers are seeking firefighters’ help to better understand the impact on safety and well-being
The SHIFT Study — short for Shift Scheduling and Sleep Health in Firefighters — is a FEMA-funded national research project led by Dr. Sara Jahnke examining how sleep and behavioral health affect firefighter safety, performance and long-term health
Career and volunteer firefighters are invited to participate in the study, and volunteers may also invite a spouse or partner to complete a survey, according to organizers
Participation involves an anonymous online survey that takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Respondents also can opt in to be contacted about future research opportunities
Organizers say firefighter experiences do not always translate into policy or practice, and they hope the survey results will provide stronger data to guide decisions aimed at improving outcomes
