WOODVILLE — The Allan Shivers Library and Museum has been awarded a grant from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health to support a new community program focused on stress management, mental wellness, and building strong social connections

The grant will fund a series of community programs designed to help area residents learn practical ways to manage stress while building stronger social networks and connections within the community

Assistant Director/Head Librarian Carolyn Williams wrote the successful grant application and will oversee the project with the assistance of library staff. As part of the program, licensed professionals, experts, and guests will be invited to present informative talks and lead discussions on topics related to stress management, mental wellness, and the importance of maintaining healthy social connections.

“Libraries are about more than books; we are an information center,” Williams said. “These programs are about learning how to cope with stress in a no-pressure environment and no stigma about mental health.”

The Booked for Better Days programs will be held on the fourth Monday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Allan Shivers Library and Museum in the Bunch Meeting Room. Each gathering will provide participants with an opportunity to learn, ask questions, meet others, and enjoy a meal together.  The library was chosen as the setting for these programs because it is a familiar and welcoming place for members of the community. Unlike a clinical setting, the library provides a comfortable environment where residents can learn about mental health, ask questions, and connect with others without feeling that they are seeking formal treatment. By bringing these conversations into a trusted community space, the library hopes to make mental health information and resources more accessible while reaching individuals who may not otherwise seek out traditional mental health services.

And there will be a little extra incentive to attend. Food will be provided at every program and simple activity, and gift cards will be raffled off among those in attendance. The library hopes the new initiative will become an opportunity for residents to learn, connect, and take time for their own well-being

The Allan Shivers Library encourages residents to watch for upcoming program dates and join us for these FREE community events. Call the Allan Shivers Library and Museum for more information – 409-283-3709
