Breakfalls for Life: Supporting Mental Wellbeing Through Judo

    October 05, 2026

As the judo community prepares to mark World Mental Health Day on Saturday 10th October, British Judo is shining a spotlight on an innovative initiative developed by the Northern Ireland Judo Federation that is using the principles of our sport to encourage conversations around mental health and wellbeing

Breakfalls for Life takes one of the first lessons every judoka learns – how to fall safely – and applies that same principle to the challenges we can face away from the tatami

Developed by Frances Robertson, drawing on her extensive experience in crisis and emergency mental health nursing, the initiative provides an accessible and engaging approach to building mental fitness, resilience and self-care

Rather than delivering a traditional mental health workshop, Breakfalls for Life uses movement, problem-solving, games, puzzles and interactive activities to help participants explore their wellbeing and develop practical strategies they can use in everyday life

At the heart of the programme is a simple but powerful connection with judo

In our sport, learning to fall is not about preventing every fall. It is about developing the skills and awareness to land safely, protect ourselves and get back up again

Breakfalls for Life encourages people to think about their mental wellbeing in a similar way – recognising the signs when things might not be right, understanding our emotions, developing strategies to support ourselves and knowing when to reach out to others

Importantly, participants do not need any previous experience of judo to benefit from the programme. The workshops use the principles and values behind judo rather than requiring participants to physically practise the sport, making the initiative accessible to both the judo community and the wider public

The programme was initially piloted at Sonkei Judo Dojo in Ballycastle, bringing together judoka, parents and members of the local community. Following positive feedback from the pilot, plans were developed to take the initiative across Northern Ireland and further afield

The initiative also reflects the wider role that judo clubs can play within their communities. While competition, technical development and performance remain important parts of our sport, judo clubs are also places where friendships are formed, confidence is developed and people can feel part of a supportive community

That message feels particularly appropriate as we approach World Mental Health Day 2026

Taking place on Saturday 10th October, this year’s theme is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change”, encouraging greater recognition of the knowledge and understanding that comes from people’s own experiences of mental health

Breakfalls for Life demonstrates how sport can create a different environment in which those conversations can take place – using familiar principles, accessible language and practical activities to help people think about their own mental fitness

For Frances and Northern Ireland Judo, the ambition is to give people the tools to recognise when they may be struggling and feel more confident about taking positive action

Because in judo, falling is part of the journey. What matters is learning how to fall safely – and knowing how to get back up
