Check Your Mood Day, observed Thursday, Oct. 8, gives people a quick reminder to pause and take a moment to reflect on how they are feeling. The annual event is part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, a national effort to increase understanding about mental health conditions and reassure people that reaching out for help is both normal and necessary.
One in five adults experiences a mental illness each year, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. And here in San Diego County, a 2024 health survey found that more than 19% of adults ages 18 and older had seriously considered suicide.
Free, confidential online mental health self-assessments are available. These tools are not medical diagnoses, but they can help residents understand whether they are dealing with everyday stress or something more serious that may require professional support.
“Check Your Mood offers an easy, friendly way for community members to check in on their mental well‑being. With just two questions, it encourages open conversations about mental health and guides residents to helpful programs, activities, and services,” said Jennifer Bransford-Koons, interim Director for County Behavioral Health Services. “While we spotlight this effort in October, the tools and resources are available all year long to support your mental wellness.”
The County also offers a free 30‑Day Mental Wellness Practice, with simple daily self-care activities such as building a nighttime routine, trying a new recipe, calling a loved one, or watching the sunset.
