Ever get into bed thinking you’re exhausted, only to lie awake staring at the ceiling?
According to a Cleveland Clinic sleep psychologist, feeling exhausted and sleepy isn’t always the same thing
“Sometimes your body and brain feel exhausted at the end of the day, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready for sleep,” said Alicia Roth, PhD
On average, Dr. Roth said it generally takes most people 10 to 20 minutes to fall asleep
But if you find yourself tossing and turning, it’s best to get out of bed rather than trying to force yourself to fall asleep
Over time, staying in bed when you can’t sleep can condition your brain to expect a struggle each night
Dr. Roth said sleep should happen naturally, and putting too much effort into it can make it harder to drift off
While everyone has trouble falling asleep now and then, it’s important to know when to seek help
“When difficulty falling asleep becomes a regular problem and starts affecting how you function during the day, that’s a sign it’s time to reach out to your doctor or a sleep specialist,” Dr. Roth explained
Dr. Roth said ongoing sleep troubles can be a sign of a sleep disorder, like insomnia
She adds that a medical provider can help diagnose and treat any underlying sleep conditions
