MORE recruits are needed for a UK sleep health study — with a callout to possible participants from this region

The AWAKE Check UK project is being led by respiratory nurse consultant Dr Phyllis Murphie RN, PhD who used to run the NHS Dumfries and Galloway sleep medicine service

Already, 2650 people have taken part, helping researchers in their bid to tackle the country’s hidden sleep disorder crisis and identify individuals at risk of undiagnosed sleep apnoea and insomnia

Now they want to sign up another 2400 to get to their goal of 5000 people

Dr Murphie said: “With up to 80 per cent of sleep apnoea cases undiagnosed and 10-15 per cent who also suffer from insomnia this is an important public study

“It’s completely unfunded and the research team are from an international background of key opinion leaders in the field.”

She revealed there’s growing concern about the number of people living with undiagnosed sleep disorders, adding: “Sleep apnoea is a serious condition linked to daytime fatigue, reduced quality of life, cardiovascular disease, and other health complications. Despite this, many people remain unaware they may be affected

“At the same time, insomnia affects millions of people and is associated with reduced wellbeing, impaired productivity, and increased healthcare utilisation

“The AWAKECheck study aims to help identify people at risk through a fast, accessible online screening tool while generating valuable evidence to improve understanding of sleep health across the UK.”

They are looking for people who

    – Snore regularly

    – Experience excessive daytime tiredness

    – Frequently wake during the night

    – Have concerns about their sleep quality

    – Want to better understand their risk of sleep apnoea or insomnia

Participation takes approximately five minutes, and users receive immediate feedback regarding their potential risk
