For decades, much of the fitnessindustry has promoted exercise for both health and physical appearance, with weight loss and muscle building often taking center stage

Some businesses are now broadening that pitch, increasingly framing fitness around longevity, healthy aging and maintaining quality of life

The shift is becoming increasingly visible across the U.S. fitness market. The National Academy of Sports Medicine’s 2026 survey of 625 fitness professionals identified longevity and healthy aging as among the fastest-growing client goals. Meanwhile, the Health & Fitness Association reported that participation among adults 65 and older increased 8.6 percent year over year, helping push total gym, health club and studio membership above 81 million in 2025.

For fitness companies, those changing priorities represent a commercial opportunity. As Americans remain active later in life, businesses are increasingly marketing services around mobility, resilience and long-term health rather than simply aesthetic transformation

    …

Oscar Kemjika, founder of iBE-FiT, is among those advocating a shift toward fitness focused on long-term health rather than appearance. A former track athlete with nearly two decades of coaching experience, he argues that physical transformation should be a byproduct of better health, not the primary goal

His iBE FiT framework, which stands for Innovate, Believe and Empower, focuses on building strength, mobility and resilience through consistent daily habits

“Form follows function,” Kemjika said. “When the body functions well, physical transformation follows naturally.”

Kemjika believes social media has amplified a fitness culture centered on comparison, rapid transformations and short-term results

“Comparison is the thief of joy,” he said. “This mindset is affecting people emotionally, mentally, and physically.”

He points to a 67-year-old client who has trained with him for six years, saying she improved measures including bone density, blood markers, balance and vitality through consistent exercise rather than extreme diets or fitness challenges

“Exercise builds far more than muscle,” he said. “It improves focus, confidence, resilience and productivity. As you age, feeling good becomes far more valuable than simply looking good.”

Kemjika’s message reflects a broader trend that extends beyond fitness. The Global Wellness Institute estimates the global wellness economy reached $6.8 trillion in 2024 and projects it will grow to $9.8 trillion by 2029. The organization says longevity has become an increasingly important theme across the sector, spanning everything from exercise and nutrition to wellness services, biohacking and other interventions marketed around healthy aging, such as cryotherapy, intravenous vitamin infusions and anti-aging therapies.

But as longevity becomes a larger commercial category, some researchers say the term is being used to describe very different approaches to health and aging

Dr. Michael Sagner, clinical advisor in longevity and preventive medicine at Ageing Research at King’s (ARK), King’s College London, warns that consumers should distinguish between preventive medicine and longevity medicine

Evidence supports exercise and preventive care, but that does not validate every treatment marketed as slowing aging or extending human lifespan

“Longevity medicine has basically no scientific base because it has never been shown that certain interventions can actively increase life span,” Sagner told Newsweek

He noted that much of the public discussion around longevity is based on observational evidence from exceptionally healthy older populations rather than proof that specific interventions can meaningfully extend human life

Recent scientific commentary has also urged caution around some of the industry’s more ambitious claims. An editorial published in Nature Medicine in August said evidence for many treatments marketed as slowing aging or extending life span remains limited and called for greater scrutiny of unsupported longevity claims

The question dean of the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and director of the Ney Center for Healthspan Science, is where healthy aging ends and broader longevity claims begin

Cohen told Newsweek that discussions about longevity often overlook the difference between life span and healthspan. While life span measures how long people live, healthspan refers to the years spent in good health. Although life expectancy has increased over recent decades, healthspan has risen more slowly, leaving many people spending more years living with illness or disability

“Lifestyle interventions such as diet and exercise improve both life span and healthspan,” he said

Cohen called growing awareness of the link between fitness and healthy aging a positive development but warned against overstating what longevity interventions can achieve

“I believe that the new awareness of the connection between lifestyle, fitness, and other modalities with healthy longevity is in fact a positive thing,” he said. “The problem lies with the unrealistic claims many of these trends are promoting.”

For fitness companies, that distinction may become increasingly important

As older adultsaccount for a growing share of gym memberships and healthy aging becomes a more prominent part of the wellness market, fitness companies have an incentive to emphasize strength, mobility and long-term function alongside aesthetic goals

Exercise can help people maintain their health and physical function as they age, but the broader commercial promise of longevity remains less certain. The challenge for the industry is distinguishing evidence-based approaches to healthy aging from claims that go beyond what research has established
