Fact is, the end of the year is hurtling towards us at pace. And whether we like it or not, the chaos of Christmas and a seemingly never-ending list of calendar invites, end of year catch ups, work deadlines and school commitments are coming for us. They’re inescapable. While we are all moving along the same timeline, the silly season really highlights two very different types of people in this world: those who find the inescapable busyness utterly exhausting, and those who find the chaos energising, reframing this period as the perfect time to tick off any outstanding goals and finish the year on a high. Truth is, no matter which camp you sit in, feeling physically, mentally and emotionally depleted when December comes to a close is more common than you think. “By the time October arrives, most people have been running on accumulated stress for months without adequate recovery,” clinical psychologist and Director of Mindset Consulting Psychology, Dr Aileen Alegado, explains to Body+Soul. “The nervous system doesn’t reset between busy periods if there’s no genuine downtime built in, so fatigue layers on fatigue. There’s also the cognitive load of close-out: deadlines, performance reviews, social obligations, school schedules, and the pressure to have achieved what you set out to in January. What people describe as end of year exhaustion is really the cumulative cost of a year of insufficient recovery finally surfacing because the finish line is in sight.”
