GreenShield report finds $2 return for every $1 invested in integrated women’s mental health support

Three Canadian group benefits players are converging on the same model: Sun Life acquired Dialogue, Canada’s leading integrated virtual health platform, in 2023 and rolled its services out to group benefits clients under the Lumino Health Virtual Care brand; June Health launched nationally in 2025 as a virtual care platform built specifically around perimenopause and midlife health, positioning itself as a workplace benefit complementing existing group plans; and GreenShield has built an integrated ecosystem connecting mental health, hormonal health, chronic disease, caregiving and aging supports into a single benefits structure. When three providers of different sizes and types are all moving toward the same integrated, life-stage-specific women’s health model, the question for plan sponsors and benefits consultants shifts from whether to adopt it to how to evaluate competing implementations. The differentiator phase is ending.

GreenShield’s new report, Advancing Women’s Health with an Integrated Ecosystem of Care, adds to that competitive context. The company found employers see $2 returned for every $1 invested in integrated mental health support for women within two years. GreenShield did not disclose the underlying sample size or methodology behind the figure in its release, so the ratio should be read as the company’s own analysis of its GreenShield+ platform data rather than an independently audited study. The more analytically useful comparison is internal: GreenShield reported a 1.5:1 return in a separate March 2026 study of integrated mental health coverage generally, before accounting for absenteeism or disability impact. The stronger 2:1 ratio for women-specific integration suggests the business case for gender- and life-stage-specific design is more compelling than for broad mental health integration alone.

    What the platform data shows

The most striking finding is around provider matching: women matched with preferred providers saw up to 72% greater improvement in wellbeing and reported 97% satisfaction. Digital cognitive behavioural therapy reduced anxiety by 25% and depression by 30%. Women were 46% more likely than men to use overnight telemedicine, allowing earlier intervention when traditional care options are least available, and were 15% more likely than men to use multiple services, moving from counselling and telemedicine in younger years toward hormonal and mental health supports in midlife. When women are the primary policyholder, dependent use of benefits rose to 51%, compared with 41% for men – a spillover effect that extends the value of women-focused integration beyond the individual.

Yan Wang, senior vice president of product, experience and health outcomes at GreenShield, said employers did not need to choose between improving employee outcomes and managing benefit costs. “When coverage and care work together, they can achieve both,” she said, adding that when care is easy to navigate, women engage earlier, stay in care longer and achieve better outcomes for themselves and their families.

The market pressure behind the investment case

The report lands as the scale of Canada’s workplace mental health burden draws increasing scrutiny. A 2026 report from the CSA Group’s Public Policy Centre put the total annual economic cost of poor mental health in Canada at $180 billion, with employers absorbing roughly $110 billion through disability claims, benefits and lost productivity, and found that just 14% of employer spending on mental health currently goes toward prevention rather than downstream costs. GreenShield’s findings offer plan sponsors a data point tied specifically to preventive, integrated investment rather than reactive claims spending.

GreenShield’s own women’s health infrastructure builds on its Women’s Mental Health Signature Initiative, which has connected nearly 200,000 women from equity-deserving communities to free, culturally relevant mental health services since 2021, alongside its 2025 launch of a nurse-led hormonal health program offering hormone panel testing and personalised care plans

For benefits providers and consultants, the convergence of GreenShield, Sun Life and June Health toward integrated women-focused care confirms a direction rather than a debate. The commercial question is no longer whether this model has merit but which implementation delivers the most measurable value for plan sponsors and their employees
