Recovery has become the new performance frontier. While training hard is still essential, more athletes are realising that the gains happen after the workout, not during it. That’s fuelled a surge in supplements designed to reduce muscle damage, improve sleep, replenish energy stores and get you ready to train again sooner

Social media is awash with influencers showing off elaborate “recovery stacks”, but not every trending product deserves a place in your kitchen cupboard. Here’s a science-backed guide to the seven supplements that are generating the most buzz – and how to use them effectively

    1. Creatine Monohydrate

Why it’s trending: Once known purely as a muscle-building supplement, creatine is enjoying a second life thanks to growing research into its benefits for recovery, brain health and healthy ageing

What it does: Creatine helps replenish adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s primary energy eans you can recover more effectively between sets and between training sessions. Emerging evidence also suggests creatine may help reduce muscle damage and support cognitive function during periods of stress or sleep deprivation

How much? Take 3-5g daily, ideally every day rather than only on training days. There’s little need for a loading phase unless you’re looking for faster saturation

    2. Magnesium Glycinate

Why it’s trending: Recovery is no longer just about muscles—it’s about sleep. Magnesium glycinate has become one of the most popular evening supplements thanks to its reputation for promoting relaxation

What it does: Magnesium supports hundreds of biochemical processes, including muscle contraction, nerve function and energy production. The glycinate form is gentle on the stomach and is often chosen for its calming properties, making it a favourite among athletes struggling with poor sleep after late training sessions

How much? Aim for 200-400mg around an hour before bed

    3. Glycine

Why it’s trending: Once largely ignored outside clinical nutrition, glycine has become a staple of many sleep and recovery routines

What it does: Glycine is an amino acid involved in collagen production and connective tissue repair, but it also appears to help lower core body temperature before sleep, making it easier to drift off. Better sleep generally means better recovery, hormone regulation and muscle repair

How much? Around 3g taken 30-60 minutes before bedtime is the protocol most commonly used in research

Omega-3 fatty acids help your body recover efficiently

    4. Omega-3 Fish Oil

Why it’s trending: Inflammation has become one of the biggest talking points in longevity and recovery, and omega-3 fatty acids remain one of the most researched ways to help manage it

What it does: EPA and DHA support heart health and brain function, but they may also help reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness and support recovery from hard training blocks. The goal isn’t to eliminate inflammation altogether – it’s a necessary part of adaptation – but to help your body recover efficiently

How much? Look for a supplement providing 1-2g of combined EPA and DHA daily

    5. Collagen Peptides

Why it’s trending: Recovery isn’t just about muscle. Tendons, ligaments and joints often become the limiting factor as we age or increase training volume

What it does: Collagen provides the amino acids needed to support connective tissues. Research suggests that combining collagen with vitamin C before loading exercises may stimulate collagen synthesis, making it particularly relevant for runners, lifters and anyone managing recurring tendon niggles

How much? Take 10-15g around 30-60 minutes before training, ideally alongside a

Electrolyte products have evolved far beyond traditional sports drinks

    6. Tart Cherry Extract

Why it’s trending: Elite athletes have used tart cherry for years, but it’s now appearing in everyday recovery stacks thanks to growing awareness on social media

What it does: Rich in polyphenols and anthocyanins, tart cherry may help reduce post-exercise muscle soreness and improve recovery after prolonged or intense exercise. It has also been linked to modest improvements in sleep quality

How much? Studies typically use 30ml of concentrated juice twice daily or an equivalent standardised capsule during periods of heavy training

    7. Electrolytes

Why it’s trending: Recovery starts with hydration, and electrolyte products have evolved far beyond traditional sports drinks. Many modern formulations contain higher sodium levels to replace what is actually lost in sweat

What they do: Sodium, potassium and other electrolytes help restore fluid balance, support muscle contraction and reduce the likelihood of cramping after long or sweaty sessions. They’re particularly useful during hot weather, endurance events or multiple workouts in a day

How much? Look for products providing 500-1,000mg of sodium per litre of fluid, adjusting intake based on how heavily you sweat

The biggest mistake many people make is assuming more supplements automatically lead to better recovery. In reality, a handful of evidence-backed products, combined with enough sleep, high-quality protein and sensible training, will outperform even the most expensive collection of powders and capsules

If you were building a practical recovery stack today, creatine, magnesium, omega-3 and electrolytes would provide the strongest all-round foundation. Add glycine if sleep is your weak point, collagen if you’re managing high-impact training or joint issues, and tart cherry during particularly demanding training blocks

Supplements can support recovery, but they can’t replace the fundamentals. Prioritise consistent sleep, adequate calories, sufficient protein and intelligent programming first. Once those boxes are ticked, these seven supplements can help you recover faster, feel fresher and get more from every workout
