    OKLAHOMA CITY –

Getting enough sleep is more than just feeling rested. It plays an important role in mental health

On this week’s Therapy Thursday, Sydney Smith from Sunbeam Family Services discussed why quality sleep can make a major difference in how we feel and handle daily stress

Sleep gives the body time to rest, recover, and recharge. When sleep cycles become disrupted, people may experience increased irritability and have a harder time regulating their emotions

Experts often say someone “woke up on the wrong side of the bed,” and there is some truth behind that phrase

Poor sleep can make everyday challenges feel more overwhelming and can leave people feeling more emotional than usual

Just like personal hygiene habits help keep the body healthy, sleep hygiene involves habits, routines, and environments that support better sleep

    Sleep hygiene can include:

    • Maintaining a consistent bedtime and wake-up schedule
    • Avoiding caffeine later in the day
    • Creating a calming bedtime routine
    • Limiting screen time before going to sleep
    • Choosing relaxing activities, such as reading a book or practicing deep breathing

A good sleep routine starts earlier than bedtime

Waking up at the same time each day can help regulate the body’s natural sleep cycle

Creating a nighttime ritual, such as taking a shower, reading without a screen, or practicing relaxation exercises, can signal to the brain that it is time to rest

While getting enough sleep can be challenging, small changes to daily habits can help improve sleep quality and support better mental health
