Daily habits as well as diet are important for blood sugar management./Photo=Clipart Korea
For blood sugar management, it is important what foods you eat. But how you live is also an important factor. According to the U.S. media outlet Fox News, American clinical pharmacist and certified clinical nutritionist Jim LaValle recently revealed an unexpected factor that can raise blood sugar in daily life. Diet is essential for maintaining stable blood sugar. In particular, even the same carbohydrates can produce different blood sugar responses depending on the individual. Jim LaValle said, “The starting point for blood sugar management is developing the habit of checking how much your blood sugar rises after eating and determining the appropriate intake for yourself.”You also need to pay attention to your breakfast. Jim LaValle said, “The stress hormone cortisol rises in the morning,” adding, “It is best to eat foods rich in protein at this time.” It is best to avoid foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates. Jim LaValle said, “Consuming excessive amounts of foods containing a lot of sugar or refined carbohydrates can make blood sugar management difficult.”Managing stress and getting enough sleep are also important. Jim LaValle said, “Chronic stress may be associated with insulin resistance.” Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose in the blood move into muscle cells to be used as an energy source or stored in the form of glycogen. When stress persists or sleep is insufficient, it can adversely affect hormone regulation, making blood sugar management difficult. There are also relevant research findings. When a research team from Charles University and Motol University Hospital in the Czech Republic analyzed changes in blood sugar during an examination period among 22 healthy medical students with an average age of 21, average daily blood sugar rose from 5.35mmol/L four days before the examination to 5.72mmol/L on the day of the examination. The researchers said, “Stress hormones such as cortisol, which is released when people are under stress, may have affected blood sugar.”In particular, insufficient sleep can affect appetite and eating habits, potentially leading to overeating. Research has in fact found that sleep apnea can increase the risk of diabetes. A research team comprising Shin Won Chul and Byun Jung Ik, professors in the Department of Neurology, and Jung In Kyung and Jeon Ji Eun, professors in the Department of Endocrinology at Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong, confirmed that patients with moderate-to-severe sleep apnea continue to experience rising blood sugar even while sleeping.
